 Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet

It was a matter of time before Amazon's Kindle Fire finds its biggest competitor. As it seems it won't be the iPad 2 as everybody guessed. There is a new player in the tablet market and it will be a strong competition. When Barnes & Noble announced their NOOK tablet it had almost the same effect when Amazon presented the Kindle Fire. It looks like the hunger for tablet devices is getting bigger and bigger and new strong competitors are appearing every month.
We are going to show you some of the main features and specifications of the NOOK tablet before it goes on sale.
As it seems from it's presentations Barnes & Noble are stressing not so much on e-books but on HD multimedia content and entertainment that are going to attract customers on NOOK Tablet.

Range Rover Evoque - Top Gear review

Range Rover Evoque - Top Gear review

Here is the review of the Range Rover Evoque by automotive specialists from Top Gear. This video shows the qualities of the new SUV in different situations.
The Range Rover Evoque is put to the test in the desert of the American Southwest. See how it measures up on the drive from Death Valley to Las Vegas.

Top Gear review Range Rover Evoque - video

While some of the Top Gear office regard it as a two-doored, two-wheel drive metropolitan abomination of all that we hold dear about this company's utilitarian past, even they can't deny that it's going to do very well.
Expect it to be the ride of choice for all Fulham/Cheshire-based wives from next summer - much as the Audi TT and Mini have dominated that market in the past.
As design director Gerry McGovern says, the Evoque is a "bold evolution of Range Rover design".

Underneath that handsome face lurks some clever tech. You get the option of front-wheel drive for the first time in a Range Rover, together with adaptive dampers and something called a ‘Terrain Response' system on the four-wheel drive. We like the sound of that...
The base engine is a 148bhp, 2.2-litre diesel which returns 58mpg and creeps under 130g/km of CO2 (in the front-wheel-drive model), while a 2.0-litre, 238bhp petrol engine offers up a 0-60mph time of 7.1 seconds.

You get loads of techie bits like park assist, blind spot monitoring, surround camera system with digital cameras, TV, DVD and keyless entry. We're still waiting to see if it's got something called ‘electric windows', so check back for updates.
Land Rover is offering the Evoque in three design themes: Pure (brushed aluminium trim, soft-touch materials), Prestige and Dynamic. Prestige gives you ‘sparkly metallic details', while Dynamic gets you 20-inch rims and Big Respec'.

This little crossover SUV will cost from £30,000 when it goes on sale in summer 2011. And it's Made In Britain. It's split the Top Gear office fairly cleanly down the middle, so we want to know what you think. / text by cars.co.uk

printf("goodbye, Dennis");

EVERY time you tap an iSomething, you are touching a little piece of Steve Jobs. His singular vision shaped the products Apple has conjured up, especially over the last 14 years, after Jobs returned to the helm of the company he had founded. Jobs's death in October resembled the passing of a major religious figure. But all of his technological miracles, along with a billion others sold by Apple's competitors, would be merely pretty receptacles were it not for Dennis Ritchie. It is to him that they owe their digital souls, the operating systems and programs which make them tick.

Kindle Fire browser test - Amazon Silk

Kindle Fire browser test - Amazon Silk
Kindle Fire browser test

Amazon Silk Official Presentation

The web browser on Kindle Fire introduces a radical new paradigm -- a "split browser" architecture that accelerates the power of the mobile device hardware by using the computing speed and power of the Amazon Web Services Cloud. The result is a faster web browsing experience, and it's available exclusively on Kindle Fire.
One of the headline features of Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablet is a completely new Web browser called Silk that is designed with a "split" architecture, allowing it to offload much of the heavy lifting to Amazon's cloud computing cluster for superior browsing performance.

When the user requests a webpage in Silk, the request will be routed to Amazon's servers in the cloud. Amazon will load the webpage on the server side, downloading all of the necessary content elements in parallel. After downloading the content, Amazon will send the compiled page — including HTML, JavaSript, CSS, and images — back to the device as a single stream of data.

Amazon Fire Silk browser demo

The Kindle Fire comes with a new browser call Amazon Silk. The Silk browser splits resources between the device and Amazon's EC2 cloud servers to render pages faster and smoother. The EC2 cloud servers will do the heavy processing power for most of the sites you will visit and will cache the content for you for quick load times and save power on the Kindle Fire. Other browsers have tried something similar to this like Skyfire but not with the power that Amazon's servers have. Watch the video below as it will give you a better idea of how Amazon Silk works and cuts page loading times in half. Makes you wonder if they will make a desktop version and/or offer this on other mobile OS platforms and join a very crowded browser market.

How we waste fuel

How we waste fuel

It is quite ironic that a major petrol company - Shell, in this case - has to point out how bad we are at wasting fuel.
But, paradoxes aside, the data obtained from a research to commemorate the Shell FuelSave Day is quite useful to highlight wrong driving habits.
The survey of 1,001 drivers concludes that inefficient motorists drive up to 1,845 unnecessary miles per year for different reasons: from avoiding a busy roundabout to going further to find a parking space under a streetlight.

Audi A6 3.0 TDI Avant consumer review

Audi A6 3.0 TDI Avant consumer review

Audi A6 3.0 TDI Avant is a nice looking car

Design
Audi uses ‘Avant’ as other car makers might use ‘Sports Tourer’ or ‘Sportwagon’. The idea is to suggest load-carrying practicality laced with a rakishness suggestive of an adventurous lifestyle. The Audi A6 Avant here is the latest of this Audi breed.
The A6 range entered its seventh generation back in February, with much aluminium in its make-up, a 70kg weight loss, a reconfigured transmission layout bringing the front wheels further forward, and powertrain revisions to reduce the official CO2 outputs. The idea was to create the look and feel of an A8 but in a smaller size, and with a multimedia system of almost sci-fi sophistication.

3-series F30 specifications

Here is how the most popular BMW of all time will look in the next few years. Considering the old model was a great success, BMW designers didn't change radically the profile of the car and it still keeps clean sporty profile with some interesting design features. BMW probably wanted to bring the design of the new 3 series more in-line with the look of its other new cars, mainly the 5, 6 and 7 Series. BMW 3 F30 will have a hybrid model in it's range as well. Naturally aspirated straight-six engines from 325i/330i are replaced by BMW's new N20 turbocharged inline-four two liter engine already introduced in a lot of BMW models. Top of the range 335i has the same N55 engine as E90. Diesel powertrain is still two liter inline-four N47 engine which is optimized for the new car.
The new BMW 3 Series is 93mm longer than before, with a 50mm stretch to the wheelbase that creates more interior room, particularly in the rear. The wheel tracks are wider too, again boosting interior space but also aiding handling.
BMW F30 Sedan will be launched on February 11, 2012 and soon after that the rest of the model range will be available.

Asus Eee Pad Slider specs and video review

Pros: Will run the latest Android OS and Adobe Flash
Full slide-out QWERTY keyboard
10.1″ IPS touch-screen with resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels
2 cameras (5 Megapixel camera with LED flash and 1.2 Megapixel front-facing camera)
1080p HD video playback support
Cons: Bulky
No trackpad
6-hour battery life isn’t optimal (the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can get up to 10 hours and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer can get up to 16 hours when connected to the keyboard)
Summary: It seems to me like this tablet might be a flop: serious typers fans can get the reasonably-priced Transformer and keyboard, and those who care more about appearance can get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and its case with the built-in Bluetooth keyboard that comes out later this month… The Slider is a strange in-between: the sliding keyboard adds bulk, but there’s no trackpad.

2012 Audi A6 test drive and review

2012 Audi A6

Audi A6 is one of the best luxury mid-sized sedans on the luxury car market. It offers good ride, impressive dynamics and plenty of extras for a car in the business class. Earlier this year a new generation of A6 came out and it's been a hit in showrooms since. The new model is a big threat to its rivals BMW and Mercedes.
The interior of the new Audi A6 is very spacious and comfortable with some design elements from the A7. For 2012 Audi offers plenty of engine choices for the A6 including a hybrid.
