Nokia 6 - new potential best seller

Could Nokia 6 really stand up against the biggest in the mid-range smartphone segment!?

The iconic Nokia brand has returned to the market with the Nokia 5 and 6 smartphones being released July 2017 in the US. We are quite excited to see the comeback of the brand and happy to have the opportunity to review the 5 and 6 editions.

After out Nokia 5 review, we’d like to introduce the Nokia 6 smartphone - an affordable option, currently priced at $229 and sold by Amazon for $179. It’s produced by HMD Global too, like Nokia 5 and we hope it will stand up to the high expectations we have for the brand.
Basic features
The phone comes with a corpus made of a single aluminum block which gives it a high-quality, premium feel above the actual price range it fits in. The phone is sold in a Matte Black, Silver, Tempered Blue and Copper color variations. For an additional price, there's a Piano Black version called the Arte Black Limited Edition, which also has extra storage.

The corpus of the phone is very sturdy and sleek, fits well in the hand despite its larger size. The phone has flat sides so if you’re used to handling phones with rounded edges, you will feel there’s some difference in handling it for a longer period of time.

The power and volume keys are conveniently on the right side of the phone, the 3.5 mm audio jack is on the top side and the microUSB port along with the speaker are on the bottom of the phone. As a nice bonus, there’s a fingerprint scanner on the front, which is still not that common in this price range.

The display is clear, bright with vivid colors, and the 5.5’’ size makes it very suitable for videos, games or photo editing, something that would please Instagram lovers around the world.

The Nokia 6 comes with Android 7 Nougat and no useless pre-loaded “bloatware” to irritate the Android fans. They’ve chosen to stay with the standard Android layout, which is a refreshingly good solution we hope more brands could make. The performance is smooth for the basic tasks, which is more than expected for this price range.

Technical specifications:
  • Dimensions - 154 x 75.8 x 7.9 mm
  • 5.5-inch Full HD display
  • Qualcomm MSM8937 Snapdragon 430 chipset
  • Octa-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB of internal storage
  • 16MP rear camera and 8MP front camera
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • 3000mAh battery
  • Duam-SIM option
  • Android 7.1.1 (Nougat)

Overall verdict

The premium build, affordable price and good-quality display are definite advantages of this smartphone and makes it a serious competition for other brands in the same price range. We are impressed with the quality of the aluminium corpus - definitely the best feature of this phone. The performance is a bit questionable as we would not be sure if the phone will perform so well under heavier load, however the basic functions are well executed, which is all we could expect from a smartphone in the Nokia 6 price range.

Is Nokia 6 worth buying?
Well... yes, especially if you are sick of the mainstream brands that you see all day long then Nokia 6 would bring some fresh air in the segment. There is nothing significantly special about this phone that we haven't seen on the market so far but there is something much bigger than that - the return of a brand that change the telecom industry some 20 years ago.
