Google Cloud Platform is set to activate a new service on all App Engine projects on April 17, 2023

Google Cloud news and updates

Google Cloud Platform is set to activate a new service on all App Engine projects in the middle of April. The service, appenginereporting.googleapis.com, will be added as part of the ongoing infrastructure modernization and will be necessary to support various aspects of metrics reporting and quotas.

As Google Cloud Platform continues to update the underlying infrastructure for App Engine, they are improving their integration with certain GCP shared services, such as Billing and Quota Management. The integration with these shared services requires the activation of the new service to properly tie-in.

The new Service Usage API will have no impact on existing apps, no impact on billing, and has no external API. The only change customers will see is appenginereporting.googleapis.com added to the list of enabled services in their Cloud Console and when running gcloud services list.

The activation of the new service is being done to avoid unintended side effects related to the existing App Engine services, appengine.googleapis.com and appengineflex.googleapis.com.

No action is required on the part of the users, but Google Cloud Platform recommends not disabling the appenginereporting.googleapis.com service while still using App Engine. Disabling this service might result in some issues with certain activities, such as viewing quotas in the Cloud Console.

Google Cloud Platform is committed to providing a seamless experience to its users while updating the infrastructure for App Engine. With the activation of the new service, users can expect an improved integration with GCP shared services and better support for metrics reporting and quotas.
