My opinion and engine specifications of the popular Opel Insignia 1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DT

My 2016 Insignia and the 1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DT engine

It has been almost 2 years and about 50 thousand km with the Opel Insignia that I bought some time ago and I still think it has one of the best engines in class.

Today I just wanted to give my short feedback after these kilometers that I covered and also a list with the full engine specifications.

1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DT - my opinion after 2 years

To be honest I was a bit skeptical about having such small engine on a big car like the Insignia. But now I can admit I was wrong - the 1.6 CDTI engine is probably the best engine for the Insignia among all the other engines offered for this model (2009-2017).

This small diesel engine is punchy and economical. It is good enough for the manual gearbox that it is offered with but also perfect for the 6-speed automatic. The 1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DT heats up and goes to perfect working temperature quite quickly compared with some other diesels, it has a lot of tourque which allows for somewhat sporty driving if you wish to do so.

Pros and cons

I have read many opinions about the 1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DT since it is quite a popular engine, being used in couple of Opel and Vauxhall models like the Insignia, Astra, Mokka.

Here is a short summary of what other drivers think about the engine:

Pros:

Fuel Efficiency: The 1.6-liter CDTI engine is known for its good fuel economy. It offers decent mileage, especially on highways and in urban driving conditions.

Smooth Power Delivery: Many drivers appreciate the smooth power delivery of this engine. It provides adequate power for everyday driving needs without feeling sluggish.

Low-End Torque: The engine's turbocharged design often provides good low-end torque, which can make city driving and overtaking easier and more responsive.

Reliability: Opel engines, including the 1.6 CDTI, are generally regarded as reliable when properly maintained. They can endure high mileage with regular servicing.

Reduced Emissions: With its common rail diesel technology, the engine tends to have lower emissions compared to older diesel engines, meeting Euro 6 emission standards.

Cons:

Noise and Vibration: Some consumers have reported that the engine can be noisy, especially when idling or under heavy acceleration. Vibrations may also be noticeable at certain engine speeds.

Turbo Lag: While the turbocharger enhances performance, there might be noticeable turbo lag, especially at lower RPMs. This delay in power delivery can be inconvenient during quick acceleration maneuvers.

Maintenance Costs: Diesel engines, in general, may incur higher maintenance costs compared to gasoline engines. This includes expenses related to diesel-specific components like fuel filters and diesel particulate filters (DPF).

Complexity: The modern diesel engine, with its turbocharging and common rail injection system, can be more complex than simpler petrol engines. This complexity can sometimes lead to more expensive repairs if issues arise.

Emissions Concerns: While the engine meets Euro 6 emissions standards, there is growing concern about diesel emissions and their impact on air quality and public health in some regions.

Overall, the Opel Insignia 1.6 CDTI 136 PS B16DTH engine offers a balance of performance, efficiency, and reliability, but it's important for consumers to consider their specific driving needs and preferences when evaluating its suitability.

Regular maintenance and proper care can help mitigate some of the potential drawbacks associated with diesel engines.
