SmallRig RM 40C RGB Mini LED: The New Heavyweight in Compact Lighting?

Compact Power, Creative Freedom: A First Look at the SmallRig RM 40C

SmallRig RM 40C RGB Mini LED review

Finding the right balance between "portable" and "powerful" is the holy grail for content creators. I recently got my hands on the SmallRig RM 40C RGB, a 40-watt mini LED video light that aims to bridge that gap. After unboxing it and putting it through its initial paces, here is my first look at why this might be the most versatile light in its class.

Out of the Box: A Complete Kit

One of my biggest pet peeves with compact lighting is having to buy "essential" accessories separately. SmallRig clearly understands this. Unlike some of its main competitors—like Zhiyun Tech—SmallRig includes a mesh diffuser right in the box.

The packaging itself is sturdy and professional, giving you the immediate impression that this isn't just a budget toy, but a serious piece of production gear.

Zhiyun Fiveray M40 Review: How This 40W Pocket Light Holds Up in Early Testing

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you notice when you pick up the RM 40C is the weight. It feels incredibly solid and well-built. That extra heft comes from the large integrated battery, which is a trade-off I’m happy to make for longer run times in the field.

The interface is equally impressive:

  • Color LED Display: The screen is crisp and makes it easy to see exactly what your settings are.
  • Tactile Controls: It features a dedicated mode button and a controller wheel for the menu, making it very intuitive to navigate through different colors and effects.
  • Modern Charging: It utilizes USB-C, keeping it compatible with the rest of my modern gear.

Performance: Power Meets Active Cooling

At 40 watts, this light packs a punch. It’s bright enough to act as a primary key light for vlogging or a powerful accent light for photography.

One interesting technical choice SmallRig made is the cooling system. Unlike other lights that wait until the unit is hot to kick the fan on, the RM 40C’s fan runs constantly. It uses variable RPMs depending on the power output, so while it stays very cool, you do have to be mindful of the fan noise if you are placing it very close to a sensitive microphone.

Battery Life and Versatility

While I haven't finished my long-term stress tests yet, my initial impressions of the battery are very positive. It seems to have more "staying power" than the competition. I’m confident that on medium power, this will easily clear 30 minutes of continuous use, which is plenty for most quick setups or run-and-gun interviews.

Final Thoughts

The SmallRig RM 40C RGB is a versatile, rugged, and powerful lighting tool. Between the included accessories and the sheer power output, it offers a lot of value for its size. Whether you're a photographer looking for a splash of RGB color or a videographer needing a compact fill light, this should definitely be on your radar.

Keep an eye out for my full, long-term review coming soon where I'll dive deep into the specific RGB modes and color accuracy!
