Finding a job in Sofia, Bulgaria

Is it mission impossible to find a decent job in Sofia? Here are our tips what to work in the capital of Bulgaria (EU)

find job Sofia, Bulgaria
Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria with so many job opportunities
Finding a decent job is never easy and sometimes can be really stressful. It almost is the same story if you live or plan to relocate in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Since Bulgaria is in the European Union for quite some time probably you would expect it to be civilized and in good order, even in the recruitment and employment sector. Well... you may be surprised but Sofia is very far from being a good example for all of you job seekers.
Finding a job in Sofia, Bulgaria can be a competitive process, but there are several strategies that can increase your chances of success. Some things you can do to find a job in Sofia include:
  • Networking: Reach out to people you know who live or work in Sofia, and let them know you're looking for a job. They may be able to connect you with potential employers or provide valuable information about the job market.
  • Online job search: Many companies post job openings on online platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and job.bg, so it's a good idea to regularly check these sites for opportunities.
  • Tailor your resume: Make sure your resume is tailored to the specific job you're applying for and highlights your relevant experience and skills.
  • Be prepared for the interview: Research the company and the position you're applying for, and practice your answers to common interview questions.
  • Learn the language: Being fluent in Bulgarian will give you an advantage when applying for jobs and during the interview process.
  • Be open to different types of jobs: While you may have a specific job in mind, be open to other opportunities that may come your way.

Negative trends in Sofia's employment market

Here are few major problems we found while researching the challenging process of finding a job in the capital of Bulgaria and one of the biggest cities in the Balkan region:
  • Labor market is not well regulated - even though there are authorities who at least on paper take care an monitor the labor market, it is a whole different story out there. Regulations do not apply for everyone and it is often heard that corruption is a big factor for success (what a surprise, nah).
  •  Disloyal recruitment process - it is a common practice in Sofia (and not only there) that recruiters are pushed to find quality work force in a very short time span. Being in a rush to get a bonus or commission from each hired person, these same recruiters are willing to hire people that are totally not suit for the job - friends, relatives etc. In this case your good qualification and experience wouldn't matter at all, which is really a shame.
  • Shameful practices - there are very bad practices in the recruitment process which really stand out mostly in the private sector in Sofia. We've heard stories when people are hired on sexual/gender, race, age and other related characteristics. For example, company owners very often hire young and beautiful girls without any work experience whatsoever. And not only they hire them but would expect some 'favors' in return.

Of course that is not valid for all companies and there are good ones as well. Still many people believe this is a common practice in Bulgaria.
