Panasonic just released the latest 2.3 DC-S5 firmware update for their hybrid full-frame camera. Which are the new features?

Panasonic S5 firmware update

Since we are big fans of Panasonic Lumix cameras and we also shoot with the S5, we are constantly following their feeds for new product update. So, recently they had this 2.3 firmware update with couple new features and some improvements as well.

The other day I got a notification on my smartphone through the LUMIX Sync app for the update and that is how I actually heard about this update (so, install the app if you still haven't).

Today, we will take a closer look at what is new for 2.3 DC-S5 firmware update and comment on the new stuff.

New features and improvement with the firmware version 2.3

  • We are going to start with what is probably the most significant one - RAW video data output over HDMI to Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. In the following table you can see the different modes, bitrates, resolution, etc.

Full-frame5.9K (5888x3312)29.97p/25p/23.98p16:912-bit

It seems like with each next update Panasonic is rising the bar more and more, especially for video features. Having 12-bit 6k video on a mid-range hybrid full-frame camera is just amazing.
Well, we still wish they had an improvement on the AF but we guess the contrast-based system has its limits.
  • Improved compatibility with DJI gimbals - now Active track can be used on RS2 and RSC2 which is just great news for video producers who rely on the amazing DJI gimbals.
  • Improved operational stability - fixed couple minor bugs.

This is the list with the firmware updates for version 2.3 for the Lumix S5 as provided by Panasonic. The screenshots that you see are what we had as preview from the LUMIX Sync app.

Well, it is not as major update as the 2.0 which fixed AF and other features big time but still good job Panasonic for regularly paying attention to customers complaints and updating your products.
