HP ProBook 450 G5 2RS03EA laptop review

Consumer review of the 15.6 inch Intel powered laptop HP ProBook 450 G5 2RS03EA

The business oriented HP ProBook 450 G5 2RS03EA is very popular in Eastern Europe and Asia and thanks to its good specifications and value for money ration it is considered one of HP's successful stories in the laptop market.

You have probably heard that HP struggled a bit in this market due to bad reputation and quality issues in many of their mid-priced laptops. Meanwhile the competition from Dell, Lenovo and Asus had a very aggressive approach in this segment and made it quite difficult for HP to achieve top sales in global markets. Today we will be taking a look at a very balanced laptop from HP, combining modern technology, good specs and relatively affordable price tag. The HP ProBook 450 G5 2RS03EA is a 15.6 inch laptop, powered by Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM (offered with 16GB as well).

HP laptops with Intel’s fifth-generation Core i processors

Price - the HP 15-bs013dx can be found online for as low as $370.

My opinion

The 15-bs013dx is pretty good laptop for the money - it is fast enough for all daily tasks and small business thanks to the Intel i3 processor. As a downside I would mention the lack of SSD, not even a smaller one for start up and cache operations. I am also not big fan of the glossy BrightView displays but there is some advantage for having a touch screen laptop.

HP 14-bs044na notebook specifications

HP 14-bs044na laptop specifications and video review

HP 14-bs044na is a compact notebook offered mostly on the European market. It features compact dimensions and good performance thanks to its balanced hardware and 14 inch monitor. This laptop features HD display with diagonal 35.6 cm (14") which is far from the top performing displays in general. I personally think that even in the lower price segment all notebooks above 13' should have Full HD resolution. Unfortunately, not the case here.

Which are the new HP laptops with Intel’s fifth-generation Core i processors

Here is the list with HP 14-bs044na full specifications

CPU, Memory and Operating System:

Intel Pentium n3710 quad core processor
1.6GHz processor speed
4GB RAM
128GB SSD storage
Microsoft Windows 10

Display
14 inch screen
High definition display
Resolution 1366 x 768 pixels

Graphics:
Intel HD Graphics405 graphics card.
Shared graphics card.

Interfaces and connectivity:
SD media card reader
Secure Digital (SD),
1 USB 2.0 port
2 USB 3.1 ports
1 Ethernet port
1 HDMI port
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi enabled

Multimedia features:
HD webcam
Built-in mic
Built-in audio sound system

Size/Dimensions: H2.37, W24, D34cm.
Weight 1.7kg.

This laptop is currently on sale at eBay for £299.99. It is a good price but you can still find many offers in this price segment. I personally would recommend you to check some of Dell's Vostro and Inspirion laptops - for this price you can definitely get Core i3 and at least 4GB of RAM.

Lenovo Thinkpad Ultrabook T460 user review and experience

Lenovo Thinkpad Ultrabook T460 is good but far from what Dell ultrabooks deliver these days

After using the business laptop Lenovo Thinkpad Ultrabook T460 for almost a year, I would like to share my experience with you - the good, bad and the ugly.

I’ve received this ultrabook as a business laptop last year and since then, I have used it heavily almost every day. Below you can see the exact specifications of the laptop I am using:

Lenovo Ultrabook T460 specifications

Size:

339 mm x 232.5 mm x 21 mm

Weight:

~ 1.7 kg

CPU:

Intel Core i5 - 6300 U CPU @ 2.40 GHz

RAM:

8 GB

Storage:

512 GB Samsung SSD

Graphics:

Intel Integrated

Display:

14 inch HD anti-glare (1366 x 768)

Battery:

Up to 14 Hours (23 WHr + 72 WHr)

Webcam:

720 p HD camera

Looks and Appearance

The ultrabook features the signature old IBM sturdy look, which may be a bit spartan for most users, me included. The sharp edges and simple design may not be very impressive, but the build quality is good, the laptop does not bend or feel unstable. It is a bit on the heavy side though, and not very slim, which is not unusual for Lenovo laptops.

The key travel is not very slim for a laptop, but it feels very convenient on my fingers. The keyboard is well spaced for comfortable writing. As I use it for business purposes, I often type a lot on a daily basis and have not yet had any inconveniences with the keyboard. The touchpad is the weak point here as usual with Lenovo - it’s not as responsive as other laptops and the touchpad buttons are difficult to press so you may as well just give up on it and use a mouse all the time as I do.

Performance

Overall the performance of this laptop is not bad, but honestly, for its price (currently sold at around US$1,100 - 1,200) I would have expected more. I have to run multiple applications (between 9 and 12) on this machine every day and for the most part, the Ultrabook fares well and replies quickly. However, I’ve had slowness in response times on several occasions, as well as everyone’s favorite blue screen of death, hurray Windows users. I alsways have issues with maintaining multiple browser tabs open for a longer period of time, which is a bit unnerving.

Battery life

If there’s a single thing I can praise this laptop on, it’s the battery life. As I described above, my daily use of this laptop includes numerous heavy applications and with all of them running and maximum brightness the Lenovo ultrabook can stay on battery for around 3 hrs 30 mins, or even 4 hrs on occasions. If left on idle with minimum brightness, this laptop can stay alive on battery for over 14 hrs.

If you are looking for a cheap Lenovo laptop you should definitely check the Lenovo G500

Display, video and audio

Lenovo have opted for an anti-glare display, which I particularly like. The viewing angle is also very good and the ultrabook performs well under bright daylight as well as in dim environments.

In video and audio aspect, there is nothing impressive to say, the ultrabook performs averagely and the audio especially is quite mediocre.

Final verdict

This is a decent laptop for business purposes with long battery life, middle to very good performance depending on load and sturdy build. Maybe I would have recommended it if it wasn’t for the price - this Lenovo ultrabook should definitely not cost the US$1,200 it’s currently sold for.

HP Stream 11 Windows Notebook

HP Stream 11 Windows Notebook - full review

The HP Stream 11 is a laptop aimed predominantly at students that’s currently sold at under $180. For that you get a portable 11-inch laptop that even includes an Office 365 subscription – it’s one of the key things that makes it perfect for students.

While undoubtedly a basic machine, the HP Stream 11 isn’t as plain as you might expect. The speakers and battery life are excellent for the price, and it’s not bad-looking either. However, the 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 display is a weak point.
Key Features
·        11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 display
·        1.28kg
·        2GB RAM
·        32GB built-in storage
·        SD card slot
·        USB 2.0
·        USB 3.0
·        HDMI
Design
The HP Stream 11 is a cute little thing. It’s available in 2 colors – blue and magenta and it definitely stands out. The plastic is soft to the touch and the HP logo cut in silver metal sits in the center of the lid, just as usual.

To be honest, this notebook lacks the elegance of, let’s say, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 or MacBook Air, but the Stream is fun and visually pleasing. Too many budget laptops come wrapped up in dull silver or grey – a bit of variety is a very welcome change.
As you can expect, the build quality isn’t sublime. The plastic frame that surrounds the keyboard is sharp and feels rough on palms and wrists when typing. The screen feels a little flimsy, and is easy to bend with your fingers. The hinge also allows you to force the screen several degrees further back than it should go, which isn’t reassuring. That said, the design and build quality is still above average for a laptop this price.

HP 635 laptop price and review

The Stream is 1.28 kg but it ‘feels’ heavy because this is essentially an 11-inch laptop in the body of a 13-inch one. A lot of its 11-inch rivals are around 200 g lighter (at a higher price, of course) so the weight is nothing to be impressed of. Still, it’s easy to transport as it’s 19.7 mm thick and 300 mm wide so it fits comfortably in a backpack or a smaller messenger bag.
A good selection of ports is available on the base. USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and HDMI slots sit on the right side, while the charging port, SD card slot and Kensington security lock are on the left.
Screen and Sound
The screen of the Stream 11 is nothing special. It’s 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768, and it’s not impressive in terms of brightness, vibrancy, or picture quality. It’s a little grainy when looked at closely – certainly compared to most mobile phones – but it’s typical of laptops this price.
Brightness is also an issue, though. It’s a bit difficult to use the Stream outdoors during the day despite the non-glossy screen with anti-glare coating. The colors are washed out and not entirely true to life. Viewing angles however are very good and you can share the screen while watching movies with a person or two without a problem (besides the small size of the screen, of course).
The audio is DTS, which is delivered through a pair of stereo speakers that sit on the bottom of the base, towards the front edge of the Stream. They’re impressively loud too, making the Stream 11 good for listening to music.
Performance and Connectivity
The HP stream is not designed to deal with heavy workload, that’s why it’s primarily built for students with light activities – word processing, browsing, video content (it can cope with HD content too).
Powering the Stream 11 is a 2.16GHz (2.58GHz with burst) Intel Celeron N2840 processor, which is combined with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, around 13GB of which is actually available.
The Stream also has Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, both of which work fine.
Software
Windows 8.1 is the operating system of choice for the Stream, and while it’s better on non-touchscreen devices than plain old Windows 8, it’s still not great. Gesture controls just don’t work as well as they should without a touchscreen, with trackpad swipes frequently failing to register. That’s more a criticism of the operating system than the Stream 11 itself, but it’s still worth mentioning.
Since only 13GB of free storage space is available out of the box, HP includes a generous 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, where you can store all your files and photos.
A one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 Personal also comes with the laptop, which is part of what makes the Stream 11 an ideal choice for students. The service would usually ne expensive, so you’d be making a very tidy saving.
Battery Life
HP claims that the three-cell Lithium-ion battery inside the Stream 11 will deliver up to 8hrs 15 mins of life before it requires charging again. It just about delivered, too, as it managed just over eight hours of web browsing and YouTube viewing. It’s also a fast charger, going from flat to 24% in just 30 minutes.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The keyboard of the Stream is very cool, keys are spaced apart nicely and look crisp and clean, with the white of the individual buttons standing out nicely from the blue dock. The four corner keys (Escape, Delete, Control and the right-pointing arrow) are pleasantly curved and easy on the eye. Our unit’s Escape key didn’t sit completely straight in its groove, looking a little wonky, but it worked fine.
It’s a good keyboard to type on, too. All the buttons offer a nice amount of travel, which allows for speedy, accurate typing. The only niggles are that it’s not backlit and the Shift key on the left-hand side is quite small, so it’s easy to accidentally hit back slash () instead. On the whole, it’s a quality offering.
HP’s ImagePad trackpad is not quite as likeable. While it’s well-sized and offers a good level of resistance when you click, it feels cheap and flimsy. When you push down on it with any force, the plastic around it flexed too.
Camera
Camera quality may not be as crucial to a laptop as it is to a smartphone, but it’s still an important feature, especially if you’re a keen user of Skype. The Stream 11 makes use of a front-facing HP Truevision HD webcam, which delivers pleasantly surprising results.
While colours look fairly washed out and pictures lack fine detail (possibly a blessing in disguise, since pockmarks pass under the radar), the camera is more than good enough for video calls. It struggles in low light settings, but so do the webcams on far more expensive laptops.
Overall impressions
The HP stream is a great choice if you have to stick to a tight budget. It’s ridiculously good value for money for a Windows laptop, particularly considering you get an Office 365 subscription with it.
Key features like battery life, speaker quality and design all leave really good impressions and ensure the Stream 11 will serve almost any student well. The only area of genuine concern is the screen – it’s a little dull and hard to use outdoors.

Lenovo Z50-75 15.6’’ 1TB laptop - best budget notebook?

Is the mid-range Lenovo Z50-75 one of the best budget laptops at the moment... probably not

Lenovo Z50-75 15.6’’ 1TB laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Z50-75, which is the subject of today’s review, is a budget laptop (~$430) with good all-round qualities for everyday activities, but all in all the configuration is nothing too impressive if you’re looking for top notch performance.

Display

The 15.6’’ screen with a resolution of 1366x768 (100 dpi) is produced by the Taiwanian Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO). It’s a simple TN screen, not a high quality so you get a clear bluish cast which can be corrected via an adapted colour profile. Overall, the colour reproduction and grayscale have room for improvement.
The Lenovo Z50-75’s glare screen does not perform well under low brightness outdoors and in direct sunlight, you basically get a mirror. This makes the laptop more suitable for home use rather than outside portable device.

Processor

The AMD processor reaches the full 3.2 GHz in practice. However, this is limited to very short load peaks and simple single-thread benchmarks like SuperPi. The clock rate drops even further in multi-threading – to 1.8 GHz, which is just below the base rate.

Storage Devices

Lenovo has not opted for just any 1 TB hard drive but for a so-called SSHD. These drives combine the high capacity of an HDD with the responsiveness of an SSD by integrating an additional flash storage cache. Seagate's SSHD installed here has a capacity of 8 GB, which is enough to significantly speed up booting Windows and important programs. All this happens fully automatically in the background; the user does not see the swift cache.

System Performance

The Z50-75 can stand up to Intel-based rivals. The swift-responding SSHD offers a higher added value than a faster processor in many situations. The operating system can be used right after booting without delays, unlike with hard drives lacking an SSD cache where a certain waiting time has to be figured in. Also, the 8 GB working memory proves extremely useful particularly in multitasking involving complex software.

Lenovo G500 laptop with Intel Pentium, 4GB RAM, 1TB, 15.6″ display

Graphics Card

Both the integrated Radeon R6 and the dedicated Radeon R5 M230 are in the low-end sector. First the Crossfire array opens the way for an impressive overall performance. That at least functions exemplarily with AMD's new Catalyst Omega 14.12 in the popular 3DMark series. The gains when dual-graphics is enabled are approximately 70 to 80%, which boosts the Radeon R6 M255DX to the level of a GeForce 840M from Nvidia. This mid-range model is found in many identically priced laptops of other manufacturers.

System Noise

Although the integrated fan is always active even when idling, its low speed level is only noticed in very quiet surroundings. That, alongside the hard drive's restrained hum, results in a noise level of just above 32 dB(A). The Z50-75 is noticed considerably more during load with approximately 37 to 38 dB(A). However, this is not a really distracting operating noise. The fan's low-pitched and stable noise characteristic particularly contributes to this positive impression.

Lenovo G780 M84BVUK review

Temperature

The laptop only heats up marginally even in the vent's area when the Windows desktop is idle. Light load, such as browsing, does not increase the temperatures much so that it is possible to use the device on the lap without restrictions. Two spots first surpass 40 °C during full load. The wrist rest and many other surfaces remain relatively cool.

Power Consumption

The Z50-75's idle consumption of 7.1 to 12.9 watts is consistently approximately 3 watts higher than the Intel-based Z50-70 sister model. This will, of course, hardly be noticed on the electricity bill, but it will affect the battery life.

Battery Runtime

Despite the relatively high energy requirement, Lenovo installs a weak 32 Wh battery that only provides correspondingly moderate runtimes.
The user will only be able to browse on the Internet or play videos for just over 2 hours in everyday use when the screen's brightness is set to 150 cd/m². It is also possible to drain the battery in roughly 60 minutes when the hardware is loaded with a 3D application.

Idle (without WLAN, min brightness)                      4h 26min
WiFi Surfing                                                      2h 16min
