Do you like the all new iPhone 6 - poll results

Poll results from our recent survey "Do you like the all new iPhone 6"

It seems like the marketing blurb called iPhone will continue for some more time. Most people would say that they are not interested in the extremely expensive iPhone but they would still buy it.
So, as a short recap of what our readers voted about - 50% said that they don't like the all new iPhone 6, 42% say that they are totally not interested and only 7% seem to like the new Apple smartphone and are probably ready to buy it.

I will leave the comments on these results to you.

Driver and BIOS issues with Dell Latitude E7240

Driver and BIOS issues and problems with Dell Latitude E7240 - fan noise and heat

Dell Latitude E7240 issues

I have been using the 12.5-inch Dell Latitude E7240 ultrabook for more than a month now and I wanted to share few things that I think owners and future owners of this computer may find interesting.

The issues

The things that I want to cover today are related to fan noise and overheating of the laptop and what is it related to. You probably know that most ultrabooks have issues with overheating and that is why many people now prefer the ultra low voltage (ULV) equipped laptop and hybrid devices as they generate less heat and are much less intense on battery consumption even though ULV processors sacrifice on performance a little bit (well not a little but latest quad-core Intel Atom processors do just fine with most everyday computing tasks).

The issue that I recently noticed with my Latitude E7240 was caused by drivers recommended by Dell for this particular model. After re-installing OS couple of times (tried with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7) I was stuck with 32-bit Windows 7 Professional which unfortunately could only read 4GB of my preinstalled 8GB of RAM. I decided that I will use the laptop this way for a while and started downloading and installing all drivers and updates recommended for the Latitude E7240 on Dell's support page and on My Dell.

After updating everything, including BIOS, sound and graphics drivers, networking drivers the machine was running pretty smooth. Unfortunately very soon I noticed something wrong - the laptop was often overheating and fan was running on maximum power even when processor load was less than 50%. Of course the first thing I did is to remove some of the 'useful' drivers that I had on my ultrabook - removed the HD premium sound, the Intel WiFi pro interface and couple more and magically my laptop was running much more cool and quiet.

Of course there was a noticeable difference in sound quality and other performance figures and features but I am using this laptop mostly for work so these were not as important.

Soon I am going to switch to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and will update you on how the Latitude E7240 behaving under any of these operating systems. I have some worries about installing Windows 8.1 as many Latitude owners reported fan noise and heating problems due to mismatched controller settings but I will probably will give it a try and see how it will go.

Google Nexus 6 is finally released

Google Nexus 6 by Motorola is now released and will hit the markets very soon

Google Nexus 6 Motorola

Google Nexus 6 by Motorola has been released recently and is expected to hit the major markets very soon. Orders for the new Google smartphone should begin in the next couple of weeks but for some countries there might be huge delays.
The all new Nexus 6 has 5.96 inch AMOLED display with QHD resolution of  2560x1440 and strong 3220 mAh battery which should last for a whole day of active use. Nexus 6 is powered by 2.7 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 805 processor and Adreno 420 GPU. This gigantic phone will be offered in couple different versions depending on the color - white or blue back cover. You can also get it with either 32GB  of internal storage space or 64GB in case you need more space (as you know Google smartphones don't offer microSD card slots as Google is vastly promoting their cloud services).
Nexus 6 will be also equipped with 13MP rear-facing with optical image stabilization and a 2MP front-facing camera.
The big Nexus will come with the latest Android Lollipop operating system and of course no additional interface on top which actually makes Nexus smartphones so good and preferred.

Price

Prices for the Nexus 6 in North America are expected to be around $650 for the 32GB unlocked sim-free version and in UK the price tag should be around £450.

LG G2 mini - first impressions

First impressions and in depth consumer review of the affordable Android smartphone LG G2 mini

LG G2 mini review
LG G2 mini

Today I will share my first impressions with the budget friendly smartphone LG G2 mini and we are going to take a quick look at the phone design and interface. And when I say budget I don't mean cheap, it is just much more affordable that the bigger LG G2 and almost twice as cheaper compared to the recently released but similarly equipped LG G3 S.

Some of you that are familiar with LG's smartphone model line have probably noticed that there is the G2 mini has very similar specs and price tag compared to the LG L90. The only significant difference is the position of the hardware buttons that on G2 mini are located on the back of the phone while on the L90 they have more traditional location on the two sides. LG L90 also has 3 sensor buttons under the screen while on the G2 mini these controls are all integrated in the Android interface and take some useful space from the display itself.

LG G2 mini looks and feel

It is probably this category where the LG G2 mini scores the most points. It is entirely made of plastics but it is very well made and unlike some Samsung smartphones it doesn't feel extremely plastic and does not use the formula 'one design fits all sizes'. The G2 mini is also very light measured at only 121 grams which helps for the comfort in daily use.

G2 mini back

The grippy bag of the G2 mini makes it easy to hold and it also looks quite durable and resistant to scratches so it would be perfectly fine to use this smartphone without additional case in the long run.
The back cover of the phone is also removed quite easy so you can easily exchange batteries in case you get an extra battery.

Size and dimensions

Even though this G2 is called mini it is not a small phone or at least compared to popular phones like the iPhone 5 which is even a bit smaller that the LG. It is called mini because when compared to the fully sized LG G2 or the latest G3 it really looks like a very compact device.

Here are couple of comparison images where you can see how the G2 mini looks next to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus:

G2 mini vs Note 3 Neo

LG G2 mini vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus
LG G2 mini compared to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I remember when couple of years ago the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was considered a very big phone but now when place next to the mini LG G2 it looks just like any other compact smartphone on the market.

LG G2 mini dimensions: 66 x 129.6 x 9.8

Main features and specs

The G2 mini has all the features of a modern smartphone including fast WiFi N connection, GPS + A-GPS support, Infrared, Bluetooth v4.0, NFC, MicroUSB v2.0 and 3.5mm headphone jack. All these features work thanks to the fast 1.2 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm processor and 1 GB of RAM. Well, some may say that 1 GB RAM is too low for a modern smartphone but the fact that LG put the same amount of memory in their latest flagship smartphone the G3 S means only one thing - LG  is aiming at achieving long battery life without sacrificing in performance significantly.

LG G2 mini comes with 1.3 MP front facing camera and 8 MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, The rear camera has BSI sensor and also features Face detection and High Dynamic Range (HDR) shooting mode.

G2 mini 8 megapixel camera

LG G2 mini has 8 GB of internal flash memory and the ability to add additional 32 GB by inserting microSD card in the slot which is under the back cover of the phone right next to the micro SIM slot. The phone also has FM radio tuner built in so you don't need to have Internet connection in case you want to listen to some radio.

LG G2 mini has accelerometer and digital compass as well.

Display

LG G2 mini has 4.7-inch QHD IPS display with resolution of 960 x 540. The display can be marked as one of the weak points of the G2 mini as most customers would expect at least HD resolution from this 16-million color screen. Again, probably LG didn't put better display here as they wanted to keep the low price point of the device and also make it as effective as possible by implementing hardware resources with lower power consumption and this way achieving great battery life which is one of the big selling points of the G2 mini.

Battery

LG G2 mini has very strong 2440 Li-Ion mAh battery which should be good for two days of use (depending on the load it may vary between 1 and 3 days). With the non-demanding processor and display the G2 mini promises to perform very well in this category and it actually does.

Interface

LG G2 mini comes with Android v4.4 (KitKat) and LG's Optimus UI which is lighter compared to Samsung's TouchWiz interface and also uses less hardware resources. Probably at some point later the G2 mini may receive Android L update but I don't think that will happen before the beginning of 2015.

G2 mini interface
LG G2 mini interface

Price

LG G2 mini is offered around $200 (200 Euros in EU).

LG G2 mini seems to be a very capable and budget friendly smartphone, equipped with all the basics of a modern phone. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a multimedia smartphone as the low resolution display may disappoint some demanding customers. LG G2 mini will probably best suit customers that need lightweight device with great battery life and low price tag. The G2 mini is also offered in few different color choices - white, black, gold and red.

Hama Ultra Style ultrabook bag after two weeks of use

Hama Ultra Style ultrabook bag tested for two weeks - our opinion and impressions

ultrabook bag
Hama Ultra Style ultrabook bag

It's been two weeks since I got the Hama Ultra Style ultrabook bag for my Dell Latitude E7240 and I wanted to share my impressions from this bag so far.

Basically this bag will do what it is designed for - protect your laptop and keep it safe as far as it is possible. This Hama bag is quite simple it has two compartments - main one which is entirely dedicated to your ultrabook and a front pocket where you can (hardly) fit a charger, USB flash memory and a wireless mouse - accessories that are all going to be in hand when using a laptop on the go.

One thing that I would change about this bag is its size - I would like it to be just a bit smaller and more compact so it could keep my 12.5 inch ultrabook more tidily. That is probably the reason why I am still looking at the sleeves that are offered for 13 inch laptops and will also fit my Dell
Other than that the Hama Ultra Style ultrabook bag is pretty good and I don't have any major complaints about it and if I do I will make sure to update you.

Thanks for visiting and please make sure to follow us at twitter and G+ in case you want to receive updates from our latest tests and reviews.

Rowenta Atlas Silence 2400W heater

Rowenta Atlas Silence SO5015 - cheap and quiet 2400W heater

Rowenta Atlas Silence heater
Rowenta Atlas Silence
Winter is coming so you better be prepared for the cold winter days. Today at our consumer blog we have a cheap alternative of the conventional heating systems - Rowenta Atlas Silence, a compact 2400W heater that will warm up an average sized room pretty fast.

Rowenta Atlas Silence has two levels of operation - 1200W and 2400W and as you can guess from the name this particular model is working at very low levels of noise - only 51 dB.
There isn't much to be said about this heater, it is light, compact and it costs around 20-30 Euros which puts it in the affordable segment. Here are couple more images so you can take a look at the Rowenta Atlas Silence packaging and operation module:

Well, that's a pretty short review but stay tuned as we will test more heaters in the coming weeks and share our impressions about them.

Apple iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - video

Video presentation of two of the most popular smartphones in the world - iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5

There is already plenty said about these two smartphones as they are two of the most popular. In today's head to head video review we are taking a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S5 as the flagship Android device and Apple's iPhone 6 on the other hand which has just been released and it is the one that is catching the most attention these days.
Of course the S5 is the more functional device with more customization options where the iPhone 6 continues the tradition of being a fashion statement for those looking for more attention in their social life.
So, here is the video comparison of the two smartphones and if you disagree with something or you just have a comment to make please do it in the form below, I would really appreciate your opinion about these two gorgeous phones.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo consumer smartphone test, specifications and full review

Consumer test of the 5.5-inch phablet Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo - pictures, unboxing video, price, specifications and full review

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo consumer test

After the initial opinion that I previously shared with you about my new smartphone Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo now it is time for the full consumer review, including the unboxing video I made and some detailed information about this premium 5.5-inch phablet.
So, it has been couple of weeks since I am using the Note 3 Neo and I am left with mixed feelings about this smartphone. Of course there is plenty to be liked about it but there also some gaps that make really bad impression when using the Note 3 Neo. That is why I decided to divide the pros and cons so it is more clear on what is worth it in this phone and what is not particularly good.

Note 3 Neo - the good stuff

There are many things that I can point out in this category but probably the most significant of them are the gorgeous 5.5-inch AMOLED display and the strong battery.
The 5.5-inch has HD resolution and many people would complain that it isn't Full HD Super AMOLED display which is again awesome. I would say that there is no difference between the two but in daily use they both deliver great colors with great deep blacks and the lower pixel density of the HD AMOLED display doesn't sacrifice on image quality which in my mind is really great. The Note 3 Neo display is sensitive enough to operate with hands or with the provided S Pen stylus which is among the best in class.
The 3100 mAh battery is another thing that makes this smartphone stand out from the crowd, With battery with such capacity can easily make it through the day and you will have plenty left in case you are not able to recharge it. I myself am not a heavy user - couple of phone calls, some browsing, 3G turned on, and hour of video playback on WiFi and I get two complete days before it falls under the critical 15% when you are reminded that a charger is needed. The charging time for such a big battery is also pretty good and it takes less than 3 hour to fully recharge the battery.
Another thing that I should probably point out about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo is its hardware which is on a very good level - multi-core processor (hexacore) processing power and 2 GB of RAM are good enough for any application or game to go smoothly. Still, even with such good hardware the Note 3 Neo manages to lag from time to time but that is another story that I will tell in just a little while.
Galaxy Note 3 Neo also has a very good 8 megapixel camera which does very good photos not only outdoors but also inside where light conditions are not that good. I will publish an article where we are going to compare few different 8 megapixel shooters and you will see that Samsung's sensor is one of the best. The quality of the FULL HD videos recorded with this phone is also pretty good but sound could be a bit better though.

Note 3 Neo - what I din't like

Probably here I should start with the awful TouchWiz interface which can make even the most powerful hardware look slow. This interface is not sorted out and I think Samsung should really give up on it as it takes too much hardware resources and browsing through the menus is not as smooth as compared to phones using clean Android with no additional interface on top. If you want to learn more about this topic please check the TouchWiz lag article that we shared recently.
Another thing that you may particularly dislike in the Note 3 Neo is the fact that is not very comfortable in regular daily use when you need just a phone most of the time - it is just too big and smaller competitors are more convenient not only for carrying around but for basic operation as well.
At last I should mention that it is still pretty hard to find any good accessories for the phone and that is why I am still searching for a good Note 3 Neo TPU case. You can also check what we found out while searching for good case for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo.

Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo is a very good cheap alternative of the regular Note 3. The Neo is slightly smaller and significantly cheaper but does everything almost as good. Of course the bigger Note 3 performs better in almost any category but lets not forget that the Note 4 is already released and with a price of over $500 the Note 3 is much closer to the new release rather than to its cheaper and smaller sibling. It is well spent money when buying the Note 3 Neo and probably rooting the phone to clean Android version makes it even more appealing, especially with the release of Android L.

TouchWiz lag on powerful Samsung smartphones and phablets

TouchWiz interface lags even on Samsung smartphones and phablets with very powerful hardware

TouchWiz interface lag
TouchWiz interface lag
I always knew that the TouchWiz interface takes plenty of the hardware resources of Smasung's smartphones and that is why I've been avoiding them and using pure Android on devices like those from the Nexus series. The strange thing is that Samsung smartphones got better and better with very high hardware resources but still the same problem appears - they lag in most operations in the menu and that is something that I find quite annoying.
The latest feedback I got about this major problem is from the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo which has hexa-core processor and 2GB of RAM which is considered quite good but still the phone lags when used for operations like browsing through the menus. This is a very big problem that Samsung should address very soon or many consumers will look for their next smartphone elsewhere. I think the best solution here is to just get rid of the TouchWiz interface, something that a lot of Samsung smartphone owners are doing now by converting to clean Android. As an experienced Android user I can tell you that this mobile platphorm and it latest versions don't need any additional interface put on top, everything that you may need additionally can be easily downloaded from the Google Play store.

So that is our thoughts on this topic, hopefully Samsung will take into consideration what their customers think and will fix this soon.
