Buying refurbished tech - best consumer tips

Useful tips when buying refurbished tech items - how to spend wisely?

Dell Latitude E7240 six months review

Buying refurbished goods is something that I strongly encourage people to do. There are couple of quire strong reasons why used tech makes sense these days:

$ savings vs buying new

As you know, refurbished tech is much cheaper than their new alternatives. The downside here is that when buying used tech items it is usually an older model that is no longer in production and that may cause you some problems servicing them. Other than that I think it is worth saving some money on purchasing refurbished, especially when it is not essential for you to have the very latest technology. For example, that is how a saved $ big time when I bought my Dell Latitude E7240 couple of years ago - bought it almost 1/2 off the buy new retail price.

Refurbished vs Recycled

I personally think that it makes more sense to use an already manufactured tech item as long as possible instead of recycling it after just few years of use. Sometimes it is just a small part that fails and could be easily replaced so that it becomes usable again. With over 7 billion people on this planet we should think more about consuming less in all aspects of our living, otherwise we risk running out of valuable resources and polluting the Earth to such extend that it would be impossible to reverse some destructive processes and habits.

Refurbished high-end electronics

One of the biggest advantages of buying refurbished goods though is the fact that one can afford buying an item from much higher class/price range as an alternative to a cheaper brand new electronics.

Example: What would you prefer, a brand new VW Golf or factory/dealer certified BMW 3-series?

Whrere to buy refurbished electronics?

The biggest auctions sites like eBay and Amazon have plenty of good used/refurbished tech, so I would strongly recommend you to check those. For Eastern European customers I would advise you to check some listings at OLX or any of the alternatives. If you can't find the item you are looking for just try with generic Google search, that may help as well.

For any questions or comments about refurbished tech and electronics, please feel free to drop me a line in the comments section below.

Thanks!

TV buying guide: Best TV size to choose in 2017

Quick buyers guide for the best TV size in 2017

TV guide

It is 2017 and the market is flooded with TVs from different brands in all different sizes and modifications. I guess it is very difficult for the average consumer to choose from so many options, so I decided to compile a small guide for those who find themselves in difficult situation while buying their next TV.

Brand matters

There might be hundreds of different brands that manufacture TV sets but it is just a few that produce real quality products. Of course price also matters but if we have to pick a champion in the "Quality" category it definitely will be Sony. The Japanese brand still holds its leadership in the consumer TV segment and I think they will keep it for a bit more, no matter the good competition from brands like Samsung and few others. And don't get me wrong, Samsung TVs are also pretty good but if I had to pick just one TV, it would be Sony.

Here I have to mention that I am quite disappointed with Philips TVs lately. They used to make one of the better panels worldwide but that changed and I would say they are quite mediocre and far from the premium performers these days.

Best TVs for 2017

SIZE

Size matters, or at least that's what most people say. If we are speaking for TVs only it really does matter. Choosing the correct TV size could be a tricky task but if you consider few simple things you will make your choice much easier.

Sony TV

  • Consider the size of the room where you will place the TV set - it shouldn't be neither too big, nor too small. If you have a room of average size just pick any of the 'universal' sizes like 41, 42 or 43 inches.

  • The purpose for buying the TV - if you need a TV set that will be used mostly for home cinema purposes then go for the bigger size. Watching regular television programs is better on a smaller screen though, so you should definitely have this in mind.

  • Price - bigger screens cost more, so if you are within a tide budget then go for somewhere in-between so you won't end up with a big screen TV branded Telefunken or Arieli.

These are just few of the tips that I can think of at this very moment but I will definitely add more and update this list soon. Don't be shy to share your opinion or questions in the comments section below, I'd be more than happy to hear from you.

TV review after one month with the Sony Bravia 40WD650

First impressions after spending a month with our new 40 inch Full HD LED TV Sony Bravia 40WD650

Sony Bravia 40WD650 LED TV
Sony Bravia 40WD650 Full HD Smart LED TV after one month

It has been almost a month since we got our brand new 40 inch Full HD LED TV - Sony Bravia 40WD650 and I can say it was the right choice.  This TV delivers as it was advertised - good Full HD picture, excellent viewing angles, Smart TV capabilities and solid build quality.

Design, looks and feel

Sony Bravia 40WD650 TVSony Bravia 40WD650 is not targeting the premium segment but it is nowhere near to looking basic or cheap. The build quality is excellent and so is the clean and simple design. You won't find any cheap plastics or anything that will make you feel you got the wrong TV.

I like the fact that this TV set is coloured entirely black, so no shiny sparkles are drawing your attention from the picture itself.

Specs and Functionality

Sony Bravia 40WD650 incorporates the advanced X-Reality PRO technology which takes care for the overall good picture quality. In Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution this television really shines.

Smart features are basic and we would probablly use 2-3 apps at most - Netflix, YouTube and sometimes a browser. I personally still haven't tried any Android Smart TV but I would say that the interface that Sony used for the 40WD650 is acceptable.

The sound quality is pretty basic as well so I had to install my 2.1 system almost immediately... and sound was just fine then, no complainst whatsoever (volume on the YouTube apps is somehow on the low side).

Other thoughts

I think for a price of around 400 Euros the Sony Bravia 40WD650 does a great job. The 40 inch size is a good compromise for both watching TV or if using it for home cinema (for cinema only I prefer 43 inch TV sets, while for TV specifically I think the perfect size is 39 inch).
